Noel Whelan was brought down by Paul Stoneman and Jamie Forrester duly dispatched the penalty into the back of the net to give Leeds the lead in the twenty-ninth minute. It was Noel Whelan who completed the scoring when he headed the second from a Matthew Smithard cross just six minutes later. Nigel Lowndes came on at outside right for Armin in the thirty-eighth minute and in the second half Andy Brown replaced Noel Whelan at centre forward and Tony Grant took over from Carlton Palmer at right half on the hour mark. In the sixty-ninth minute Tony Dorigo was given a run, replacing Mark Ford and then ten minutes before time Mark Beeney made way for Michael Franks in goal. For Halifax Wright replaced Elliot Beddard at centre forward for the start of the second half, L. Ludlow replaced S. Johnson at inside right on the hour mark, A. Woods took over from Darren Heyes in goal a minute later and Michael Midwood came on for Gary Worthington at inside left after sixty-nine minutes and finally N. Horner replaced Michael Trotter at right half in the seventy-seventh minute. R. Faley (Huddersfield) was the referee.
